A Legacy of Fishing

For generations, the fishermen of Punta Lobos have launched their pangas from the golden sands of this rugged Baja beach, casting lines into the Pacific’s deep blue waters. Their boats, often powered by nothing more than the roar of a single outboard motor, have been the lifeblood of Todos Santos—delivering marlin, dorado, and tuna to local tables and markets.

But in the mid-2010s, a powerful developer known as Tres Santos set its sights on Punta Lobos. Plans emerged to build a luxury resort with over 4,000 homes, a hotel, and upscale amenities on the very beach where fishermen had worked for decades. The project threatened not only their daily access to the sea but also their way of life.

The fishermen, organized under the Todos Santos Cooperative, refused to be sidelined. They believed that the beach was not just a place to fish, it was their heritage, their community, and their future. They stood firm, blocking roads, raising their voices, and demanding respect for their rights.

In 2017, their resolve paid off. A Mexican federal court unanimously upheld the rights of the Punta Lobos Fishing Cooperative, ruling that the developers had no legal right to interfere with the fishermen’s traditional access to the beach. This landmark decision was a rare victory for small-scale, sustainable fishing communities in Mexico.

Today, Punta Lobos remains a testament to the strength of its fishermen. While parts of the beach have been developed, the heart of the fishing community endures. Fishermen still launch their pangas from the same sands, sharing their stories with visitors and passing down their knowledge to the next generation.

Their fight was not just about protecting a beach, it was about preserving a way of life, a connection to the sea and the spirit of a community that refuses to be erased.
